Leah's inspiring journey: overcoming challenges through football

Leah's inspiring journey: overcoming challenges through football

From a young age, Leah has faced challenges with social interaction and anxiety as a result of her autism. Like many autistic young people, situations such as meeting new people, communicating in groups, or navigating unfamiliar environments, could feel overwhelming.

Finding confidence through football

However, through football, Leah has found a space where she can express herself, build confidence, and develop meaningful connections. Leah began playing football at the age of 11, and it didn’t take long for her passion for the game to shine through. Football has provided a structured environment where teamwork, shared goals, and clear roles helped Leah feel more comfortable and supported.

Achievements on the Pitch: Louth FC and Beyond

Her dedication and passion for the game quickly paid off. Leah completed her first season with Louth FC in 2022 and was recognised for her determination and progress by receiving the “Most Improved Player” award for her team. This achievement reflected not only her growing technical skills but also the perseverance she showed in overcoming personal challenges. In her second season, Leah’s confidence continued to grow. She became an important part of the team, playing in every match as a centre-back.

The following year marked another exciting step in Leah’s journey. She moved to another Louth team while also joining the Lincoln City Development Group, where she has been able to further develop her skills and train in a more advanced football environment. This opportunity has allowed her to learn from experienced coaches, challenge herself, and continue building her confidence.

Leah has also celebrated several remarkable achievements along the way. Her Louth team travelled to France to compete in an international tournament, where they performed brilliantly and finished in second place. Experiences like this have helped Leah broaden her horizons, meet new people, and grow both as a player and as a person.

Leah has continued to push herself in new directions. In 2025, she successfully qualified as a football referee, an impressive accomplishment that demonstrates her willingness to take on responsibility. She also completed 30 hours of volunteer coaching alongside professional coaches at Lincoln City, gaining valuable experience and contributing positively to the football community.

Supporting the next generation of footballers

One of the most inspiring parts of Leah’s journey is how she is now supporting others. She helps with the Louth Under-6s team, encouraging and guiding some of the youngest players as they begin their own football journeys. By sharing her enthusiasm and experience, Leah is helping to inspire the next generation while continuing to develop her own leadership and communication skills.

In February this year Leah has completed the FA Introduction to Coaching with Lincolnshire FA and is now a qualified FA level 1 coach, with the aspirations of continuing her learning and furthering her coaching qualifications.

Leah's advice for other young people thinking of getting involved in sport is:

"Whether its playing football or doing something else, just take the opportunity - do it -whether you've got asthma or have autism just do it"

Recognition as a Lincolnshire Sport & Physical Activity award finalist

Leah was recognised for her achievements as a finalist for the Active Achievement Award at the Lincolnshire Sport & Physical Activity Awards 2025. Hear from Leah in this video filmed for the awards.
