Finalists Announced
Take a look at the finalists for the Lincolnshire Sport & Physical Activity Awards 2026
A donated bike might seem like a simple gift, but through Wheels for Life, it can create opportunities, develop skills and help people become more active.
Originally established by Active Lincolnshire, the Wheels for Life programme gives unwanted bicycles a second chance. Rather than being left unused or ending up in landfill, donated bikes are refurbished and redistributed to people who need them most, helping to remove barriers to physical activity and active travel across Lincolnshire.
Now, the programme is entering an exciting new chapter as stewardship transfers to GLL, ensuring its long-term future while continuing to build on the impact already being achieved across the county.
One recent project highlights exactly what can be achieved when organisations come together around a shared goal.
The initiative brought together Active Lincolnshire, GLL, HMP Lincoln, the Lincolnshire County Council Active Travel Team, YMCA and Lindum Group to create opportunities for people both inside and outside prison walls.
The journey started at HMP Lincoln, where donated bicycles formed the basis of a rehabilitation project designed to develop practical skills among prisoners. Following specialist training delivered through the programme, prisoners learned how to assess, service and repair donated bikes, gaining valuable hands-on experience and vocational skills that could support future employment opportunities.

The refurbished bikes were then given a new purpose.
Working alongside programme partners, the bikes were delivered to children taking part in Bikeability sessions through the Holiday Activities and Food Programme at the YMCA. For many young participants, the sessions were about much more than learning to ride. Children developed confidence and essential road safety skills, while some experienced riding a bike for the very first time.
What made the project particularly special was what happened next.
Rather than simply using the bikes during the sessions, every child was given the opportunity to take their bike home, enabling them to continue cycling and stay active long after the programme ended. Thanks to support from Lindum Group, each child also received a cycling helmet, helping ensure they could ride safely and confidently.
The success of the project demonstrates the value of partnership working at every stage of the journey.
From local residents donating unwanted bikes, to prisoners refurbishing them, organisations coordinating delivery and businesses providing additional support, every partner played an important role in creating positive outcomes for communities across Lincolnshire.

"Wheels for Life has created benefits at every stage, helping prisoners develop skills and confidence while giving more children the opportunity to enjoy cycling. We're proud of what the programme has achieved and excited to see GLL take it forward."
"We're delighted to be taking on Wheels for Life and continuing its success. The initiative has already changed lives through the power of partnership, and we look forward to building on that legacy and expanding its impact across Lincolnshire."
As Wheels for Life begins its next chapter with GLL, the programme continues to show that the impact of a donated bike stretches far beyond two wheels and a frame. Through partnership working, communities are becoming more active, people are developing new skills and more residents across Lincolnshire are gaining access to the many benefits of cycling.
