The Unsung Hero Award recognises a volunteer who gives up their own time to a club, association, activity or project for the benefit of the participants and/or community. It celebrates those who have made a significant impact through their volunteering and support opportunities for people to be more active.
Ben has been a dedicated volunteer with Gainsborough Dolphins Swimming Club for nearly a decade, starting as a young volunteer and now taking on the role of coach and club leader. Since the Head Coach’s retirement in January 2025, Ben has stepped up to take internal responsibility for the club. He works around 13 hours a week for the club, coaching over 180 children - from the Learn to Swim programme through to the Masters Squad.
Ben leads by example, creating a positive, supportive atmosphere where swimmers of all ages and abilities can thrive and achieve their potential. He plans internal competitions and supports swimmers at external events across the country. In January, two 11-year-olds he coached became county medalists - one securing double county champion titles. Whether cheering swimmers on in Sheffield or coaching in Louth, Ben’s energy, passion, and consistency have made him the heart of the club.
Fred has been a committed volunteer with Spalding Hockey Club for 57 years. During this time Fred has willingly accepted many roles and bought his own infectious style and passion to each one. He was club Chairman for 22 years, 1st Team Club captain for 10 years and is currently the club President. A dedicated coach for many years, Fred championed inclusive sessions - particularly supporting young people with social, emotional, and behavioural needs.
At 75 Fred remains active by playing for the development squads and still scoring the goals to help support the juniors but also model best practice. He has played for East Over 65s/70s and England Over 70s B Team. For the last ten years he has developed a Primary School Hockey Tournament, that has received national recognition in 'The Hockey paper' inspiring best practice across the country. He also developed an initiative to encourage young empires. More recently, he has introduced Walking Hockey, welcoming older players, families, and newcomers to the game.
Tanya dedicates countless hours to helping others improve their health and wellbeing through walking, running, and swimming. A long-standing Run Director at Boston parkrun, Tanya stepped up to become Event Director when needed, managing daily queries and keeping the event thriving. She was also instrumental in launching a parkrun at North Sea Camp Prison, offering those nearing release a positive outlet, a sense of inclusion, and the chance to build healthy habits and friendships for life beyond the prison walls.
Tanya led on establishing Boston’s Junior parkrun, raising the required funds and helping create a safe, fun event for children every Sunday. She has also given her time as a coach with Boston Triathlon Club and a local track club.
