The Active Club Award celebrates a club or group who go above and beyond to create a better environment for members, and increase accessibility and inclusion. The award recognises clubs that have broken the mould and done some differently to create new opportunities or get a more diverse group of people involved.
North Hykeham Tae Kwon Do Club is a welcoming club for all ages and abilities based in One NK. This year the club has created an inclusive, welcoming space for older adults through the creation of dedicated ‘Senior’ sessions. With members ranging in age from their 50s to their 80s, the sessions provide tailored training alongside social opportunities, enhancing both physical and emotional wellbeing. The club breaks down barriers, easing fears around joining new activities.
Members feel supported, informed, and valued, regardless of ability or background. Many have competed in the Tae Kwon Do championships - with inspiring performances that earned praise from judges. The club fosters intergenerational connections, pairing seniors with younger members for skill-sharing and mentorship. With a strong ethos of courtesy, perseverance, and indomitable spirit, NHTKD empowers older members to stay active, connected, and confident.
The Sleaford Snails Walking Football Club is a not-for-profit, inclusive club for adults aged 55+, promoting fun, fitness, and friendship through walking football. Founded in 2017 and now welcoming over 70 players weekly, the Snails provide a supportive space for older adults - many managing health conditions like Parkinson’s, MS, cancer, and arthritis - to stay active and socially connected.
With three sessions a week at Better Gym Sleaford, the club welcomes all skill levels and backgrounds, focusing on encouragement over competition. A strong social aspect, including post-game coffees and regular events, fosters community and combats loneliness. The club offers low-cost sessions and free kits, while donating over 10% of income to local causes. From sponsoring referees to international friendlies in Greece, the Snails are a model of active ageing, inclusivity, and community spirit.
Slea Paddlers is an inclusive, community-led canoe, kayak, and paddleboard club based in Sleaford, offering people of all ages and abilities the chance to access water sports. Founded in 1999, the club provides a supportive space where members can build confidence and develop paddling skills at their own pace - with a focus encouragement over competition.
Described as “one massive family,” the club promotes wellbeing through regular river sessions, scenic trips, and environmental initiatives like river cleans. They also engage the wider community, offering taster days and supporting groups like Scouts and Cubs. Run entirely by trained volunteers, Slea Paddlers continues to grow, welcoming members from across Lincolnshire with a strong ethos of inclusivity, environmental responsibility and fun.
