Guidance & support for Schools and Education

We offer guidance to help schools and the education network provide accessible physical activity options to children and young people in Lincolnshire.

  • Active curriculum guidance

    Active curriculum guidance

Physical activity builds learning power in children, helping them to retain information and regulate their emotions. That’s why Active Lincolnshire works to combat sedentary lifestyles by supporting schools to add movement across their curriculum, using tools like exercise snacking to incorporate physical activity throughout the school day.

In our Knowledge Hub, you’ll find guidance on creating an active curriculum in your school, as well as useful resources and insights to help educate parents, teachers and students about the importance of physical activity.

  • Education support

    Education support

Young people’s attitudes to sport and physical activity are shaped heavily by their experiences at school – Sport England research shows that having a bad experience can put children off being active for life.

Working with our partners of the One Network Active Lincolnshire supports schools and education providers to help children be more active and provide advice, guidance and support with physical education needs. The Chief Medical Officer guidelines for physical activity recommend children from 5 - 18 are active for at least 60 minutes a day – and that 30 of these minutes are in school.

    Schools support webinars

On behalf of the One Network, we provide online webinars for schools. Delivered by a series of industry experts, the webinars are designed to support and inform professionals involved in the delivery of the PE, school sport and physical activity.

    Secondary school PE Teacher training

The Secondary School Teacher Training programme is a collaboration between Sport England, the Activity Alliance, the Association for Physical Education and the Youth Sport Trust, which provides funding and access to professional development opportunities for PE teachers across the country. For more information on this and on inclusive practice in schools, visit the Sport England website.

    PE Premium

The Government invest £320m per year directly into primary schools with the objective of achieving self sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport. The long term vision is that all pupils leave primary school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.

Active Lincolnshire support Primary Schools with their PE and sport premium funding. You can contact us by email for advice on the most effective ways to use the funding.

Or visit our Knowledge Hub to access all our resources and guidance documents.

  • One Network

    One Network

The One Network, facilitated by Active Lincolnshire; is a collaboration of not for profit organisations from across the education sector and community and voluntary sector who come together to advise and influence the physical activity provision for children, young people and their families.

Membership of the One Network include representatives from Active Lincolnshire, Lincolnshire County Council, School Games Organisers (SGO’s), Charities (such as Inspire+), Children’s Links and gains feedback from educational specialists. The One Network feeds into the Let’s Move Lincolnshire blueprint as a group of industry experts.

The One Network provides a platform for sharing best practise, problem solving and shaping PE and school sport delivery in both curricular and extra-curricular settings. Every school across Lincolnshire is represented through One Network membership, giving each school a voice and opportunity to contribute to the countywide provision of school PE and sport. There is also direct links into the community and voluntary sector to support children, young people and their families outside the school setting and in their local communities.

  • Equality, diversity and inclusion

    Equality, diversity and inclusion

Every child should have the opportunity to take part in physical activity. Alongside our key partners, we work with schools to create inclusive and accessible activity opportunities for children of all ages and abilities – whether that’s through training, funding, new equipment, or dedicated sports events.

Here are some of the ways we support equality, diversity and inclusion in schools.

Active Lives Children & Young People survey

We coordinate Sport England’s Active Lives Children & Young People survey for Lincolnshire, helping us assess attitudes towards physical activity in young people across the county. Using this insight, we create opportunities tailored to those that need the most support.

Find out more about the Active Lives survey here.

    School Games

Using insights from the Active Lives survey, we deliver the government-led School Games programme in Lincolnshire – giving children across the county the chance to take part in inclusive sports. As part of the School Games offer, we also help schools deliver activities tailored to young people with special education needs and disabilities (SEND).

Find out more about the School Games here.

    Wheelchair Sports Programme

We deliver the Wheelchair Sports Programme to a wide range of participants across the country, including schools, workplaces, disability organisations and clubs. Using reverse integration, the programme gives disabled children and adults the chance to take part in the same sports session as non-disabled people – creating a level playing field that gives people with disabilities the chance to excel.

Find out more about our Wheelchair Sports Programme here.

    Training and guidance

We support schools to implement best practices for equality, diversity and inclusion, offering training and guidance to make sure children across Lincolnshire have access to quality physical education.

  • Delivering sports in schools

    Delivering sports in schools

Physical activity is a crucial part of any child’s development. As well as improving their physical health, daily movement has been shown to boost academic performance, memory, motivation, social skills and mental wellbeing. That’s why we work with schools to create a wide range of fun, accessible opportunities for children to be active during the school day – whether that’s through PE lessons, exercise snacking or dedicated events.

Working with our key partners, including national governing bodies, School Games Organisers and One Network, we create and promote opportunities for young people across the county to engage in sports – both in and out of school.

A core part of this work is supporting Lincolnshire’s School Games Organisers (SGOs) to bring schools together for festivals, celebrations and competitions, providing activities that work to engage children who may not currently take part in sport. We also work with schools to upskill existing staff or access external coaching providers, allowing them to offer a broader range of activities.

These activities are informed by our Active Lives and Youth Voices insight, allowing us to create and deliver targeted opportunities that meet the needs of young people across Lincolnshire.

    Active curriculum guidance

Active Lincolnshire work closely with the education network, which includes the eight School Games Organisers offering support to schools across the county. Their role includes effectively organising and delivering a programme of competitions based on national frameworks as well as targeted physical activity links for those that need support to be active. We also work directly with schools, colleges and universities to offer guidance and support to increase activity levels for children and young people. External providers, like coaching agencies, are also supported to ensure they offer the most appropriate opportunities to schools.

Working closely with the education network we focus on upskilling and educating teachers and providers in the form of conferences, workshops and webinars to ensure access to the most up to date guidance and information.

  • Funding opportunities

    Funding opportunities

Funding opportunities in the education sector come from a variety of sources, including the government, local councils and third parties. There are also occasions where ad-hoc funding becomes available, such as the Department for Education’s initiative to open new school facilities, or the government’s holiday activity and food programme.

To make things easy for educators, we collate these opportunities on our funding page as and when they arise – giving you access to everything you need to know about securing funding for your school. We also support primary schools with their PE and sport premium spending, ensuring children in Lincolnshire have access to fun and inclusive physical activities.

  • External providers

    External providers

PE, sport and physical activity cover a whole scope of activities – which is why some schools choose to work with external providers, such as coaching agencies, to support and upskill existing staff. These external agencies can be a wonderful asset, helping to enrich your curriculum and signpost children to further opportunities to engage with sport.

If you’re thinking about working with a coaching agency, it’s important to find the right people. As a minimum, coaches should hold a Level 2 certificate in the sport they are delivering. They should have an appropriate person check and be able to evidence safeguarding training, and their insurance should cover them for the activities they offer to your students.

Our Knowledge Hub has some useful resources, including tool kits, to help you find the right coaches for your school.
